Giro 2020 Favourites stage 20: Four brutal mountains in 100 km

Hugh Carthy - Giro 2020 Favourites stage 20:The stage itself is 200 kilometres long, but all climbing is centered in the second half . The elevation gain adds up to 5,300 metres, so this is tough test. Would be fantastic if the GC battle would come down to this brutal stage.

The first 85 kilometres take place on a sheer endless false flat. The route gets steeper upon approaching the Col Agnel and from then onward the route goes either up or down.

The Col Agnel (21 kilometres at 6.9%) is succeeded by the Col d’Izoard (13.9 kilometres at 7.1%) and the Colle del Monginevro (8.4 kilometres at 6%). After a descent of almost 10 kilometres the finish climb appears. The road to the the French skiresort Sestriere is 11.4 kilometres long and the average gradients sits at 5.9%. The ascent is steady, although the last part is somewhat steeper than the rest.

It may seem far-fetched after such a brutal day in the high mountains, but those with some juice left in the legs could turn out on top, especially when an elite group is still together and we’ll see a sprint finish unfold. At the end of the 200 kilometres race with 5,300 vertical metres the last 400 metres are flat.

Obviously, how the race unfolds will depend on the GC, so we’ll update this article during the Giro d’Italia.
