Giro 2017 Favourites stage 10: Perfect day for Tom Dumoulin

Time triallists are favourite to win stage 10 in the Giro d'Italia - obviously because it's an ITT. The route amounts to almost 40 kilometres, while 12 kilometres are (slightly) uphill. (Slideshow route/profile)

Tom Dumoulin and Rohan Dennis, those were the favourites in advance of the Grande Partenza. BAt May 5th, they started the Giro d’Italia to test their Grand Tour credentials for the first time, but Dennis’ put these ambitions on ice after crashing in the 3rd stage before he called it quits in stage 4.

Obviously, Vasil Kiryienka is a renowned time triallist, too. Yet the former World Champion only won Chrono des Nations since he claimed the rainbow jersey in 2015.

The route of the 10th stage is slightlt undulating with three sections standing out. The first one is 5.2 kilometres at 3.1%, the second 1.5 kilometres at 2%, while the road is averaging approximately 2% in the last 6 kilometres. Obviously, for Dumoulin this should not raise an issue – after all, as shown in the stage to Blockhaus, he is a more than descent climber with a big engine. Moreover, he could grab the maglia rosa if he puts half a minute or more into Quintana.
