Giro d’Italia 2016 Favourites stage 2: Kittel, Ewan, Greipel, or…

Stage 2 in the Giro is tailor made for the fast men. The only categorised climb is crested with 35 kilometres left. Besides, at 1 kilometre, it's an extremely short hill. (Slideshow route/profile)

So that’s ample time for the sprinters teams to bring their fast men to the fore. To all appearances Marcel Kittel has the best credentials. After his sluggish year 2015 the German is back to his best form in 2016. In the opening time trial he powered to fifth place, only 11 seconds down on winner Tom Dumoulin. This opens up possibilities to take the pink jersey in the next few days – all sprint stages – as each win the Giro d’Italia comes with a time bonus at 10 seconds.

Kittel’s only appearance in the Giro was in 2014. He won stage 2 and stage 3 (stage 1 was a team time trial) before he was forced to abandon as he fell ill.
