Straight from the start the riders head for the hinterland. In doing so they rise to a 470 altimetres and then it’s back along the Ligurian coast again. They pass Savonne and Varazze and take the short climb up Prato Zanino (206 metres, again after a small outing into the hinterland.
Genoa last hosted the Giro in 2011 and it turned out to be an emotional event. The stage went to Livorno and every 10 kilometer another team drove upfront. Finally Leopold Trek came forward, the team of Wouter Weylandt who died descending the Passo del Bocco the day before. The Leopold Trek riders were accompanied by Tyler Farrar of Garmin, one of Weylandt’s closest friends. They crossed the line together.
Today’s ride sees a finish in Genoa. The local circuit of 6.8 kilometres is bound to stage a bunch sprint.
