The time trial is 54 kilometres, offering GC men with time trial skills an outstanding opportunity to do business. Uran was impressive in last year’s 42 kilometres time trial, wiping away all his rivals – Diego Ulissi finished second at 1’17” – the Colombian catapulted himself into the pink jersey. This year he is 2 minutes down on Aru so he is forced to give it all he has got.
Bad luck in stage 13 forces Contador to chase, without a doubt this brings out the best in the proud Spaniard. Richie Porte is another one thwarted by fate, so expect him to shine.
Specialists like Tony Martin, Tom Dumoulin and Rohan Dennis are absent in the 2015 Giro. May be lesser gods such as Luke Durbridge and Stef Clement will be eyeing up their chances.
It will be interesting to watch Ilnur Zakarin. The surprise winner of the Tour de Romandie is a strong time trialist. He already won a stage in Italy.
*** Rigoberto Uran
** Alberto Contador, Richie Porte
* Stef Clement, Luke Durbridge, Ilnur Zakarin
