Stage 15 is the third stage of this year’s Giro dedicated to Il Pirata. In stage 8 his favorite training climb was included and yesterday saw a summit finish in Oropa where he won in 1999.
In the year preceding that victory, Pantani won the only Giro of his career. He also won the stage that finished on Plan di Montecampione on the way to victory.
To the north of Milan the bunch can enjoy an easy start to proceedings, passing through Monza and Bergamo. The only climbing today is reserved for the finale, but what a finale it is. For 18.65 kilometeres the road rises from 204 to 1,665 metres – that’s 1,446 vertical metres, meaning an average gradient of 7.8%. The steepest parts of the climb are 12%.
