Predecessors
La Vuelta Femenina has been in its current form since 2023, but its first predecessor dates back to 2015. In the initial three years, the race was known as La Madrid Challenge by La Vuelta, which was a one-day criterium race in the centre of Madrid on the final day of the men’s Vuelta. In 2017 and 2018, the women’s race expanded to a two-day event under the name Ceratizit Challenge by La Vuelta, and in the subsequent three years, one additional stage was added each time. However, the race still coincided with the Vuelta for men.

So, the history of La Vuelta Femenina is similar to that of the Tour de France Femmes and La Course. It started as a one-day race and gradually evolved into something bigger. The 2023 edition was the first to take place in the spring, entirely detached from the men’s race.
