Race report
Michael Kukrle, Dmitriy Strakhov and Pavel Kochetkov escape early on. The trio widens their lead to 3 minutes, but after the first attempts to create echelons it falls to 1 minute. The gap bounces back to 3 minutes, and the yoyoing continues with every new attempt to split the field in the cross winds.
Strakhov gains the maximum amount of time bonuses in the intermediate sprints.
The three sit up after the second intermediate sprint and they are reeled in with 36 kilometres to go.
The sprint comes down to a Philipsen/Cavendish clash with the Briton taking the spoils. Ackermann finishes in third.
Philipsen keeps the overall race lead ahead of Strakhov, while Cavendish moves up to third.
