The Tour of the Basque Country is never even, but stage 5 is as good as it gets for the sprinters. Pure sprinters don’t have to try, this could be a chance for fast men with stamina. The Michael Matthews’ and Matteo Trentin’s of the peloton.
Although the route is far from flat, the uphills are doable. Two climbs stand out. The road to the village Areitio climbs for 2.3 kilometres at 5.8%, while the La Reineta climb is likely to have an impact in terms of the stage victory. This 6.4 kilometres ascent at 5.6% is crested with 22.6 kilometres remaining. The home straight also runs slightly uphill.
The first three riders on the line gain time bonuses of 10, 6 and 4 seconds, while two intermediate sprints – at kilometre 144 and 175.1 – come with 3, 2 and 1 seconds.
