The first 800 metres are slightly downhill and then the climb up the Uzartza kicks in: a 5.5 kilometres toil at 8.5%, peaking at 580 metres. In the drop the riders storm past Santuario de Arrate, yesterday’s arrival place, and with 12 kilometres done they are back down.
According to Basque standards the rest of the ITT is substantially planar. Except for a small uphill section at kilometre 13 the rest flat and even slightly downhill.
The ITT in last year’s Tour of the Basque Country was won Tom Dumoulin, albeit the route was much hillier featuring the steep Wall of Aia.
