Last year’s ITT on the Tour of California was an out-and-back race in Morgan Hill. Tejay van Garderen took the spoils that day.
Sprinters or attackers will have a chance for glory in Morgan Hill this time. The start and finish sections are on flat roads, while the middle part takes place on more lumpy terrain. The riders are to crest six hills with Mount Hamilton – 7.2 kilometres at 8.4% – standing out. This ascent appears more than 70 kilometres before the finish. The descent is interrupted by the last KOM climb of the day on Quimby Road – 2.1 kilometres at 8.6% – before the rest of the route is undulating until the flat finale of 20 kilometres.
The vertical gain of the 3rd stage is 2,900 metres.
The first three riders on the line win time bonuses of 10, 6 and 4 seconds, while two intermediate sprints (at kilometre 72 and at kilometre 186) come with 3, 2 and 1 seconds.
