Race report
It takes 70 kms for the break to take shape. Then Jesper Asselman, Benjamin King, Jelle Wallays, Aman Kamyshev, Sam Bewley and Lars-Petter Nordhaug join forces to race to a lead of almost 6 minutes.
Lars-Petter Nordhaug is first the Simplon Pass with peloton almost 4 minutes in arrears. On the following climb, to Drugno, Kamyshev is dropped. Meanwhile, title defender Miguel Ángel López crashes and he is forced to abandon.
Asselman and King are the last men standing – yet, they are caught with 6 kms remaining.
In the ensuing sprint Nikias Arndt wants to the lead-out for Michael Matthews, but instead Sagan jumps to his wheel to scream past the German. Victory sealed, number fourteen in the Tour de Suisse – a record.
Damiano Caruso finishes safely inside the bunch and since he took 1 bonus second at an intermediate sprint he is now 16 seconds ahead of Kruijswijk on GC.
