All big guns should have a Champs-Elysees sprint victory on their palmares. Mark Cavendish is record holder in the peloton with four wins. Yet, it’s been a while as it was Marcel Kittel outsprinting the bunch in 2013 and 2014, while André Greipel did so in 2015. It was his fourth stage win that edition.
The final stage is only 113 kilometres and we can expect the road to the Champs-Elysees to be filled with chatting, champagne and an occasional cigar (when Purito feels like it). But once in Paris it’s all systems go with riders trying to escape and a chasing pack. Usually the outcome is… a bunch sprint. Current Astana-boss Alexander Vinokourov was the last to stay ahead of the unleashed pack. We’re talking 2005 here.
