Race report
Damien Howson, Simon Clarke, Iván García, Filippo Ganna, Alessandro De Marchi and Andrea Vendrame establish the breakaway after some 10 kilometres. Niccolò Bonifazio, Clément Davy, Kasper Asgreen and Magnus Cort track them down in the climb to Penna Sant’Andrea. The lead of the ten never exceeds 2.30 minutes.
Howson sits up and waits for the peloton just before the San Giacomo climb. The gap has fallen below 1 minute by then.
Vendrame, De Marchi and Cort head out together on the clim, but it’s to no avail. The Visma | Lease a Bike led peloton reels them in 7 kilometres before the summit.
Jonas Vingegaard accelerates 2 kilometres later and he distances his rivals. He reaches the summit 1 minute ahead of Ben O’Connor, Jai Hindley, Thymen Arensman, Juan Ayuso, Isaac del Toro, Iván Sosa and Cian Uijtdebroeks.
Sosa and O’Connor lose contact on descent, but the Australian makes it back.
Vingegaard is flying and he widens his lead a little in the remainder of the race. He wins the stage to take the leader’s jersey, while Ayuso outguns Hindley in the sprint for second place. That’s also their position on GC.
