Ruta del Sol 2021 Route stage 2: Baza - Alcalá la Real

Thursday 18 February - At 183.2 kilometres, the 2nd stage of the Ruta del Sol travels from Baza to the Castillo de la Mota in Alcalá la Real. The fortress is perched on a hill overlooking the town, which means the race finishes on a punchy climb.

The riders traverse the rolling plains to the north of the Sierra Nevada. The route is far from flat, but the climbs are never excessively demanding either. Chances are that it will come down the the steep climb to the Castillo (or Fortaleza) de la Mota.

The climb to the ruined 13th century fortress is 800 metres long and rises at 10%. Which is an average gradient – the roads gets steeper near the finish line.

Last year’s Ruta del Sol served a similar finish in Iznájar, where Gonzalo Serrano took the spoils after a late attack.
