Race report
Jaakko Hänninen, Mirco Maestri, Alessandro Tonelli, Mattia Bais and Filippo Tagliani jump clear early on. The five open up a 4 minutes gap.
The gap falls to 1 minute on the Portella Mandrazzi. Arnaud Démare, Mark Cavendish and Caleb Ewan can’t follow the pace in the peloton. The Frenchman reaches the summit 1.20 minutes after the peloton, while Cav is 3 minutes in arrears. Ewan’s chances to make it back are slim as he is 5 minutes behind.
Démare rejoins the bunch on descent. The peloton keeps on pushing and catches the lead group with 66 kilometres remaining.
While Cav and Ewan sit up and stop the chase, Almeida gains a time bonues of 2 seconds in the second intermediate sprint.
Démare powers to victory in the ensuing sprint. The Frenchman outguns Gaviria and Nizzolo.
López finishes safely in the bunch to extend his overall race lead.
