Race report
Midway through the hectic race the peloton brings back a larg lead group. Simon Carr pushes on alone before Fabbro, Mollema, LL Sánchez, Bouchard, Gallopin, Guerreiro, Kangert, Storer, Edet, Zana, Bouwman, Ulissi, Bennett, Rubio, Visconti and Sepulveda rejoin him. The attackers carve out a gap of more than 3 minutes.
On the climb to Ovindoli Storer, Bennett, Bouchard, Fabbro, Edet, Carr and Mollema leave the others behind.
Carr heads out alone with 26 kilometres to go, while Bouchard tracks him down. Bouwman and Gallopin make it back to the chasers before Mollema, Bouwman and Storer go after the leaders on the plateau leading to Rocca di Cambio. Bouchard leaves Carr behind.
With 4 kilometres to go Bouwman tries to bridge across to Bouchard and he makes the catch just before the flamme rouge. Meanwhile, Bernal turns on the afterburners in the background and he overhauls the two inside the last 300 metres. Another acceleration drops the last rider in his wheel, Ciccone, and the Colombian solos to victory and the pink jersey.
