The Giro d'Italia started on Saturday 8 May with 184 contestants, while 40 of them did not reach Milan.

Krist Neilands was the first rider to withdraw as early as the first day. The Latvian broke his collarbone after the ITT when he returned to the team hotel and crashed. Pre-race favourite Mikel Landa was the second rider who could not continue. The Basque crashed hard in the finale of the 5th stage.

A notable number of stage winners did not reach the finish line in Milan: Merlier, Campenaerts, Dombrowski, Ewan, Mäder, Nizzolo, and Lafay.
