Giro 2021 Favourites stage 3: Strong sprinters or late attackers

Peter Sagan cata - Giro 2021 Favourites stage 3:image: Cor VosStage 3 on Giro serves a flat race with an intriguing finale. Two small climbs in the last 13 kilometres are likely to hurt pure sprinters, while the likes of Sagan will be pleased.

The route is a red carpet ride for the pure sprinters, but things tend to tilt in the last 70 kilometres. A series of three hills within 30 kilometres are the first indication. But since it is still a long way out and the climbs are no Zoncolan material by any stretch of the imagination, they pose no threat to the sprinters – yet.

Two even smaller climbs inside the last 13 kilometres are expected to have a bigger impact. First a 2.5 kilometres climb at 5% and then a sharp 1 kilometres climb at 7%. After the last hill there are 5 kilometres remaining to the finish line in Canale. Half of it goes downhill.

On paper, strong sprinters and late attackers with descending skills are the most likely candidates to celebrate in the Giro’s 3rd stage.
