The points in this competition are awarded at finishes and intermediate sprints. The amount of points vary with the kind of terrain of the particular stage. Most points are given in the flat stages, followed by medium mountain and high mountain stages. The lowest amount of points are awarded in the ITT, obviously, because these don’t feature intermediate sprints.

The distribution of points in the 2020 Giro d’Italia are as follows:

Maximum amounts of points at the finish: 50 – 35 – 25 – 18 – 14 – 12 – 10 – 8 – 7 – 6 – 5 – 4 – 3 – 2 – 1 (in stage 4, 6, 7, 11, and 19)

Medium amount of points at the finish: 25 – 18 – 12 – 8 – 6 – 5 – 4 – 3 – 2 – 1 (in stages 2, 5, 8, 10, 12, 13, and 16)

Lowest amount of points at the finish: 15 – 12 – 9 – 7 – 6 – 5 – 4 – 3 – 2 – 1 (in stages 1, 3, 9, 14, 15, 17, 18, 20, and 21)

The amount of points at the intermediate sprint for the maglia ciclamino (first of two sprints) is always the same: 12 – 8 – 6 – 5 – 4 – 3 – 2 – 1
