Giro 2020 Favourites stage 7: Back to the fast men

On the seventh day of action the Giro serves the first entirely flat route. Zero hurdles between the start in Matera and the finish in Brindisi. Moreover, the route is short - only 143 kilometres in length.

So this a perfect opportunity for the pure sprinters to have it their way. Unless… crosswinds change the race into a battle for position, we should expect the fastest finishers in the peloton to arrive with fresh legs in Brindisi. Normally, pure speed will be the crucial factor in the 7th stage of the Giro d’Italia.

Last year the Giro saw both Ackermann and Ewan power to victory twice. Démare, Gaviria and Viviani all won one stage, while Viviani was the big winner in 2018 with four victories.

Démare is the most successful sprinter in this edition. He took two stages, although the route of the stage 7 is different. This is the territory for pure sprinters – that is, as long as the wind does not blow as strong as predicted…
