Giro 2020 Favourites stage 14: Young gun versus old hand

Filippo Ganna - Giro 2020 Favourites stage 14: Young gun versus old handThe Giro d'Italia treats the time trialists to three chrono tests. Who are the major contenders to win the second one, which takes place on an undulating to hilly route of 33.7 kilometres?

The toughest test on the road from Conegliano to Valdobbiadene is the Muro di Ca’del Poggio. The 1.1 kilometre ramp at 12% appears as early as kilometre 6. An undulating section at the top and a false flat downhill leads onto 13 kilometres on the flat.

With 9 kilometres to go the the course starts to climb again, although not a steep as before. The ascent of almost 6 kilometres goes up at shallow gradients – sometimes peaking out at 4 or 5% – before a short descent leads onto the finish climb of a few hundred metres.

Young gun Filippo Ganna is going head to head with old hand at the game Tony Martin. The German is a four time World Champion, while the Italian took gold in the recent ITT World Championships in Imola. Yet, it remains to be seen what Martin’s ambitions are. He rides the Giro as a super-domestique for Kruijswijk.

A more likely scenario is that Ganna’s biggest oponents for the stage honours are his team mates Dennis and Thomas.
