Giro 2019 Favourites stage 3: Another sprint finish

At over 220 kilometres, the 3rd stage of the Giro d'Italia travels to a flat and exposed finish in Orbetello. Echelons are really the only thing that could stand in the way of a bunch sprint. (Slideshow route/profile)

The likelihood is that the finish will be decided between the fast men who ventured to Italy. Young Pascal Ackermann aims to best top guns Elia Viviani, Fernando Gaviria, Arnaud Démare and Caleb Ewan on the promenade of Orbetello.

Some gentle uphills are scattered throughout the route, but the vertical gain is really nothing to worry about. When the sprint teams are watchful, nothing will stand in the way of a bunch sprint. The scenic road across the Lagoon of Orbetello is fully exposed, so it will be crucial to survive possible echelons when cross winds start to rip up the peloton.

Before the riders storm onto the seafront promenade in Orbetello they zigzag through a chicane inside the last 500 metres.

German champion Ackermann won this Giro’s first sprint finish ahead of Viviani and Ewan.
