Gent - Wevelgem 2020: Pedersen wins thrilling finale

Mads Pedersen outsprints Florin Sénéchal and Matteo Trentin in Gent-Wevelgem. Pre-race favourites Wout van Aert and Mathieu van der Poel finish in the places eight and nine. (Slideshow route/profile)

Race report
Seven riders open up a gap after 10 kilometres. Mark Cavendish, Julien Morice, Alexis Gougaerd, Leonardo Basso, Alexander Konychev, Kenny Molly and Gilles De Wilde widen the lead to almost 8 minutes.

A strong group with Van Aert, Van der Poel, Teunissen, Kristoff, Trentin, Stybar, Küng, Pedersen and Vanmarcke overhauls the leaders on the plugstreets.

Vermeersch (Gianni) strikes and Trentin, Pedersen, Rowe, Gougeard, Teunissen, Vanmarcke, Küng and Vermeersch (Florian) go with him. On the last ascent, Kemmelberg, Gougard drops back, while Van der Poel, Van Aert, Asgreen, Bettiol and Lampaert rejoin the lead group. Sénéchal, Teuns en Degenkolb bridge across a little later.

Inside the last 15 kilometres Bettiol accelerates and Asgreen, Trentin, Van Aert, Van der Poel, Küng, Lampaert, Degenkolb, Pedersen and Sénéchal go with him.

Following several attacks in the last kilometres Trentin strikes just before the flamme rouge with Bettiol and Sénechal in his wheel. Pedersen bridges across and powers to the win.
