Race report
Ludovic Robeet, Aaron Van Poucke and Ander Okamika attack virtually from the gun to open a gap of more than 4 minutes before the peloton takes the reins.
The gap has fallen to 2 minutes when the riders enter the local lap. Ben Turner sets the pace on the Hertstraat climb and he pushes on with Magnus Sheffield, Victor Campenaerts, Alex Kamp and Giacomo Nizzolo. Remco Evenepoel tracks them down with Dylan Teuns and four more riders in his wheel.
The peloton comes back together before the first passage on the line, while the attackers are reeled in a little later, with 63 kilometer remaining.
Ben Turner opens a gap on the second Moskesstraat ascent. Evenepoel, Campenaerts, Wellens, Cosnefroy, Barguil, Stannard and Pidcock track him down on the Holstheide climb, while Teuns and Sheffield bridge across later.
The ten cross the line 32 seconds ahead of the main group. Two laps left to go.
Teuns drops back with mechanical problems before Barguil, Evenepoel and Campenaerts lose contact on the Hertstraat climb. Just before the Moskesstraat the three rejoin the front of the race.
Stannard and Campenaerts can’t follow the pace on the Holstheide climb before the remaining seven enter the final lap 1 minute ahead of the main group.
Sheffield sneaks away with 4 kilometres to go and grinds his way towards the line, while his team mates Pidcock and Turner neutralise all attacks. The 19 year old American wins the race before Cosnefroy sprints to second place. Wellens finishes in third, but he is relegated and Barguil completes the podium.
