Race report
Attacks are flying from the gun, but it takes 60 kilometres for the decisive move to take place. Zdenek Stybar, Dylan van Baarle, Michael Woods, Tim Wellens and Marc Soler join forces and Thymen Arensman, Pierre-Luc Perichon and Carlos Barbero bridge across. Barbero can’t follow the pace and drops back, while the other seven open up a maximum gap of more than 5 minutes.
Perichon loses contact on the last climb of the day, Alto de Abelaira, and the other six reach the summit almost 2 minutes ahead of the main group.
The peloton gives up the chase after the Abelaira and the gap drifts out again.
Stybar and Soler head out together in the descent and Tim Wellens chases them down. The other three regain contact just before the flamme rouge.
Woods moves to the front to enter the finale in first position, but then Wellens takes over. The Belgian picks the best line on the narrow uphill streets and wins the race ahead of the Canadian.
Roglic finishes safely in the main field to maintain a 39 seconds lead over Richard Carapaz with Carthy in third, another 8 seconds further behind.
