Vuelta 2015 Favourites stage 16: ‘Especial’ climber for ‘especial’ finale
Stage 16 features seven categorized climbs abd the best is saves for the finale. Alto Ermita de Alba is a 6.8 kilometres toil at 11% with a steepest section at over 21%. Perfect for a ligh weight climber like Fabio Aru. (Slideshow route/profile)
GC guys can go all the way as tomorrow is a rest day. Furthermore, at Alto Ermita de Alba is the last summit finish in the Vuelta 2015, so climbers have no choice – they have to attack when they want to take time. The stage after the rest day is a long and flat ITT.
Expect Fabio Aru on the attack to put time into time trialist Tom Dumoulin. Aru is a light weight climber, tailor made for the super-steep last climbs (the penultimate climb, Alto de la Cobertoria, is no picnic either). Purito is another climber who has no choice but attack.
*** Fabio Aru, Mikel Landa, Joaquim Rodríguez
** Nairo Quintana, Esteban Chaves, Rafal Majka
* Alejandro Valverde, Domenico Pozzovivo, Louis Meintjes
