Vuelta 2014 Route stage 17: Ortigueira – A Coruña
Wednesday, September 10 – Stage 14 spoils GC riders with a bonus rest day – or so it seems. The 174 kilometres ride between Ortigueira and Coruña is tailor made for sprinters. Or is a group of brave escapees capable to stay ahead of a raging peloton?
The stage will produce nice images – waves crashing in on the rugged coast of Galicia. The riders leave the coastal town of Ortigueira and the rest of the day they remain close to the sea.
It’s a rehab for the climbers. After stages boasting with impressive climbs, ride 17 in the 2014 Vuelta is almost flat. That is, ‘Spain plain’ – the road undulates as if there’s no tomorrow. Bets are on a group of escapees will want to break free of the bunch and to stay upfront, possible taking advantage of the winds that can be quite strong in this part of Spain.
Yet it is not to be expected the escapees stay ahead. The stage to Coruña is actually the last chance for aspiring sprinters. Therefore their teams will go to great lengths to real in the breakaway group in time.
The arrival town of A Coruña is the economic centre of Galicia, located on the Atlantic Coast. Ten times La Vuelta finished here in the past, the last time was in 1995. German Marcel Wüst was the best in the bunch sprint.

The finish is expected around 17:40 (CET).
