Vuelta 2014: Favourites stage 14 - Climbers par excellence
Stage 14 is a drill only suited for climbers par excellence. After cresting two categorized mountains the deep finale goes up by over 14% for kilometres in succession, even touching a section of 19.5% just under the top. Fodder for the likes of Froome, Contador and Rodríguez. (Slideshow route/profile)
Unless a bunch of escapees are at the bottom of the closing climb with giant-like gain, it seems likely the GC men are going to battle it out on the slopes of the steep climb to La Camperona.
Chris Froome, Alberto Contador, Alejandro Valverde and Joaquim Rodriguez are the most likely contenders on the 14.1% slopes in the last three kilometres. Of course the big four are not the only ones capable of steering up steep mountains. Other riders to watch are Fabio Aru, Wilco Kelderman, Robert Gesink, Ryder Hesjedal, Julian Arredondo, Esteban Chaves, Warren Barguil and Wout Poels.
