Race report
Once the flag is dropped 21 riders escape to race to a 4 minutes lead. Break away specialist Thomas De Gendt is one of them, along with Daniel Teklehaimanot, Jay McCarthy, Victor Campenaerts, Xandro Meurisse, and David Gaudu. Before re-entering Barcelona those riders leave their companions and with 10 kms left De Gendt is the last riders to be reeled in. Then Chris Froome heads out on his own, but he is caught atop Monjuic.
Dan Martin attacks on the ensuing false flat and Valverde jumps to his wheel. In the dying metres of the race Martin is caught by the chasing pack, but leader Valverde stays ahead to take his third stage win in seven days Volta a Catalunya. Impressive!
