Tour of California 2018 Stage 1: Gaviria outguns Ewan and Sagan to take GC-lead
Stage 1 in the Tour of California is a flat criterium in Long Beach of 134.5 kilometres. In a stellar field with almost all world class sprinters Fernando Gaviria powers to the first leader's jersey in California. (Slideshow route/profile)

Race report
Andrei Krasilnikau and Tanner Putt jump clear when the flag is dropped. They race to a lead of more than 2 minutes before the peloton takes control and with 8 kms remaining the breakaway is brought back.
In the ensuing sprint Fernando Gaviria outclasses Caleb Ewan, while Peter Sagan comes in third.
With a final climb of 12 kilometres at 8% the 2nd stage is for the mountain goats and GC-guys.
