Tour de Suisse Route stage 5: Unterertzen – Rettenbachferner
Shortly after the start riders cross the border to Liechtenstein, a microstate in central Europe. Just as shortly Austria is entered and it is after 70 kilometres the climbing actually begins. With 109.6 kilometres done the Bielerhöhe is crested, a giant at an elevation of 2,036 metres.
The descent takes the riders to 700 metres and for 30 kilometres it is waiting for the road to go up again. Beginning with not too steep sections the climb to the Rettenbachferner is a monster. Officially the ascent begins in Soelden and for the next 12.1 kilometres the average gradient is 10.1%.
In 2014, the 5th stage was a totally different story. Back then a bunch sprint was won by Sacha Modolo, besting Peter Sagan and John Degenkolb.
