The first phase of the route is nothing special. A minor climb to Castelbajac, and that’s it. Basically, it is long drumroll before the riders tackle the Aspin at kilometre 48. The climb opens with gentle gradients, but the second half – beginning with the steepest kilometre at 9.5% – rarey drops below 8%. The Aspin totals 12 kilometres, while the average gradient sits at 6.5%.
The riders plunge down to Saint-Marie-de-Campan, only to go straight back up again on the Tourmalet. Similar, but harder. To be precise: longer and steeper. The gradients hardly fall below 9% from kilometre 10 onwards. The Tourmalet is 17 kilometres long and the average gradient sits at 7.3%.
