Race report
It takes more than 25 kilometres of hard racing fo the breakaway to take shape. Sean Bennett, Omer Goldstein and Pierre Latour carve out a gap of more than 4 minutes.
Bennett is dropped with 65 kilometres remaining. Moments later half the peloton hits the deck and the other half speeds up.
The remaining leaders are brought back and Quentin Pacher gives it a go with 45 kilometres to go. The Frenchman opens up a gap of 1.30 minutes before the peloton begins to reel him in. The catch is made inside the last 19 kilometres.
Deceuninck-QuickStep showcases a special lead-out in the streets of Carcassonne to frame a special record. Ballerini jumps clear, García closes the gap with Mørkøv in his wheel before Cavendish finishes it off. Voilà, that’s 34!
Pogacar stays in the yellow jersey.
