Tour de France 2021 Favourites stage 13: Sprinters or attackers

Mark Cavendish Tour - Tour de France 2021 Favourites stage 13: Sprint in Carcassonnefoto: Cor VosTo judge from earlier Tour de France stage finishes in Carcassonne, the breakaway is likely to be successful. To judge from the route, a sprint finish is the most likely outcome. (Slideshow route/profile)

The first ever Tour de France stage finish in Carcassonne happened in 1947. Lucien Teisseire won that race and five riders succeeded him since then. And on every occasion it was an attacker who took the poils.

But, obviously, past performances are by no means a guarantee of future results. For one, the course will be crucial – and the course of the race Carcassonne is virtually flat.

Cavendish is on fire this Tour. The Manx Missile won three sprints already.

On the other hand, the course of stage 12 was tailor made for a bunch sprint also, and it didn’t happen. So, maybe, past performances will be repeated in Carcassonne after all – and we’ll see another successful breakaway.
