Race report
Lawrence Naesen and Mattia Bais jump clear at km 5, while Alessandro De Marchi bridges across. The three open up a gap of more than 6 minutes before the peloton takes control.

The three enter the hilly zone 4.30 minutes ahead of the peloton, while Caleb Ewan is dropped from the peloton with 75 kilometres remaining. Mark Cavendish is the second sprinter to lose contact.

On a climb inside the last 33 kilometres the gap between the attackers and the peloton has fallen to 1 minute. Christopher-Juul Jensen attacks from the peloton, and Lorenzo Rota and Dries De Bondt go with him. But it’s a short-lived attack.

Meanwhile, De Marchi leaves his companions behind. His solo ends 21 kilometres before the finish.

Alessando Covi strikes in the last kilometre of the Monsano climb, while Arnaud Démare loses contact in the back. A group of some 40 riders reaches the summit together.

Yates, Formolo, Ciccone and Van der Poel strike on descent. Van der Poel goes alone inside the last 5 kilometres but he is caught 1 kilometre later. A Carthy attack is neutralized as well.

The race comes down to a sprint. Girmay opens early on the slightly uphill home straight. Van der Poel goes after him, but he lacks the energy for the final pull. Girmay wins his first Grand Tour stage in Jesi.

The GC riders finish together, so López stays in pink.
