In the course of history Tortolì saw plenty of uninvited guests. Carthaginians, Romans, Vandals, Byzantines and Spaniards – they all they conquered the town. This time a diverse crowd with lots of nationalities will swarm the streets, yet, the locals can rest assured. The peloton of the Giro d’Italia leaves their town after a good night sleep.
As in the 1st stage, the route is following the coastal roads. As a consequence, the riders face hardly any vertical metres. Basically, the Capo Boi is the only ‘obstacle’, albeit it lies at an elevation of less than 100 metres. The hill is crested with 41 kilometres remaining.
The leg finishes in Cagliari, the capital of Sardinia – and if the race does boil down to a bunch sprint, the sprint teams definitely have something to talk about…
The first three riders on the line take time bonuses of 10, 6 and 4 seconds, while the final intermediate sprint (at kilometre 98.7) comes with 3, 2 and 1 seconds.
