Race report
Maarten Wynants, Romain Guillemois, Daniel Teklehaimanot and Björn Thurau are in the break of the day and they race to a maximum gain of 7’20” before the bunch takes control and brings it down to 2 minutes. There it lingers. At the penultimate climb up Côte du Villard Teklehaimanot and Thurau leave their companions, while the German goes solo on the last climb.
With 5 km’s left Thurai is reeled in by Kennaugh, Grivko, Izaggire, Wyss and Oss. The pack is a few seconds down.
Peter Kennaugh attacks with 2 km’s to go en gives it all he’s got. That’s a lot and to make it even better: it is enough and the man from the isle of Man outperforms the chasing peloton. He takes 10 bonus-seconds and is in yellow with a 0’06” lead over Sacha Modolo, who is awarded 6 seconds for outsprinting the pack and finishing second.
