Last year, the Dane was in a class of own. Winning three stages, he stayed 223 points ahead of Fred Wright with Enric Mas another 50 points down in third place.

Until 2020 the amount of points at the intermediate sprints and finishes did not vary with the kind of terrain of a particular stage. But since 2021 the regulations have been changed and the points distribution is similar to the Tour de France.

The distribution of points at La Vuelta is as follows:

Maximum amounts of points: 50 – 30 – 20 – 18 – 16 – 14 – 12 – 10 – 8 – 7 – 6 – 5 – 4 – 3 – 2

Medium amount of points: 30 – 25 – 22 – 19 – 17 – 15 – 13 – 11 – 9 – 7 – 6 – 5 – 4 – 3 – 2

Minimum amount of points: 20 – 17 – 15 – 13 – 11 – 10 – 9 – 8 – 7 – 6 – 5 – 4 – 3 – 2 – 1

Amount of points in intermediate sprints (all stages, except ITTs): 20 – 17 – 15 – 13 – 10
