Race report
Attacks from the gun, but still no break at the foot of the first climb, Alto de Cuatro Vientos. Then Wout Poels gives it a go. Several riders try to join him, but can’t close the gap.

The Dutchman reaches the summit in first position. Back in the valley the peloton is together again.

Olivier Le Gac and Rudy Molard jump clear before Damiano Caruso is the first rider to bridge across, followed by Robert Stannard, Romain Bardet, Kenny Elissonde, Rafal Majka, Lilian Calmejane, Angel Madrazo, Julen Amezqueta and Martijn Tusveld. The eleven put 3 minutes into the peloton.

The gap falls below 2 minutes on the Collado Venta Luisa. This inspires Caruso to head out alone with Bardet, Tusveld, Amezqueta and Majka in pursuit.

In the run-up to the Alto de Castro de Fiabres Tusveld can’t follow the pace in the chase group before Geoffrey Bouchard takes his place at the climb.

The lone leader enters the Alto de Velefique 3 minutes ahead of the chasers, while the peloton is trailing at 5 minutes. Landa can’t follow the pace on the climb.

Yates strikes with 9 kilometes to climb and López and Kuss go with him. Roglic, Mas and Bernal rejoin them later before others also bridges across.

Yates goes again, and again. Mas and Roglic regain contact before the two push on together. Yates, Haig and López are the first chasers without coming closer.

Caruso solos to triumph before Roglic outsprints Mas for the second place.
