Stage 18 in La Vuelta a España is a sprinter's opportunity Spanish style, which means the fast men do have to climb to an elevation at over 1,000 metres before getting the chance to go head to head at the flat arrival. (Slideshow route/profile)
The organizing body of the Vuelta a España is rather cruel to the sprinters. Edition 2016 features five chances for the fast men – that is, five stages that are flat to Spanish standards. Three of those are set in the last week, so if you want to make a lasting impression you have to suffer a lot.
Stage 18 is opportunity #4 for fast men. The penultimate chance, the last one being in Madrid. By the way, it’s no easy gift as the highest peak in stage 18 is at an elevation of 1.085 metres, while the arrival is south of Valencia at the mediterranean.
