Last year’s route was shorter and did not feature two short climbs in the last 6 kilometres. The climbs in particular should suit the charactertics of Van Aert, especially the steeper one just before the line. Which is 1.5 kilometres long and averages 7.8%.
Contrary to last year, Ganna is riding the Tour de France. Arguably, the Italian and Belgian are the world’s best time trialists. The two have dueled against each other on six occasions with Ganna turning out on top most of the time. The only time that Van Aert triumphed was in last year’s flat and short Tirreno-Adriatico ITT.
The most recent Ganna win was in June’s Critérium du Dauphiné, when the Italian was 2 seconds faster on a flat to gently rolling course of 31.9 kilometres long.
