Race report
Julius van den Berg, Mirco Maestri and Filippo Tagliani initiate the breakaway after almost 10 kilometres. Pascal Eenkhoorn and Nicolas Prodhomme bridge across, while Romain Bardet is forced to abandon due to ilness after 30 kilometres.
Eenkhoorn sets the pace on the Colle di Nava. Tagliani is left behind and the other four reach the summit more than 6 minutes ahead of the peloton.
The gap has fallen to 10 seconds when Van den Berg strikes just before the flamme rouge. Eenkhoorn brings him back before the peloton comes storming past with 650 metres.
Arnaud Démare wins the sprint ahead of Phil Bauhaus and Mark Cavendish, while Juan Pedro López faces his tenth day in the pink jersey.
