Giro 2021 Route stage 15: Grado - Gorizia

Giro d'Italia 2021Sunday 23 May - Stage 15 of the Giro is mainly played out on a lumpy circuit in the region alongside the Italian-Slovenian border. The last ascent - short but sharp - appears with 4 kilometres remaining.

Located on the lagoon between Venice and Trieste, Grado is an enchanting place. The riders head north on flat terrain and the first climb appears after 30 kilometres. It’s a nothing-to-worry-about obstacle of 3 kilometres at 5%.

The route winds its way further north and enters the circuit after approximately 60 kilometres. Most of it is situated on the Slovenian side of the border. The 31.3 kilometres lap is two and a half times, while the climb to Gornje Cerovo appears three times. It is 1.7 kilometres long and averages 8.5% before the route drops shortly, only to continues to climb at shallow gradients to Gonjače .

After the last passage in Gornje Cerovo there are 16.5 kilometres remaining to Gorizia, which stands exactly on the Italian-Slovenian border in the Isonzo Valley. The last vertical obstacle of the day is a punchy hill inside the last 4 kilometres before the final kilometre serves 500 metres on cobbles.

The second intermediate sprint – at the foot of the last hill – comes with 3, 2 and 1 seconds, while time bonuses of 10, 6 and 4 seconds are awarded to the first three riders on the line.
