After a hill in the early stages of the race the midway climb up the Valico della Somma is the second obstacle of the day. It is an ascent of 7.4 kilometres long with an average gradient of 4.3%. That’s not very demanding and sprinters should be able to survive the climb. And, if not, their team mates will have enough time to navigate their leader back to the peloton. There are 40 kilometres between the summit of the Valico della Somma and the finish in Foligno.
Tim Merlier is the most successful sprinters on this Giro, since Caleb Ewan pulled out on the eight day. The Belgian sprinter won the 2nd stage
