Race report
The pack just rolled out from Pravia and riders attack from the gun. Pawel Bernas is the first rider to open up a gap. But the battle for the break keeps raging. Mark Padun, Jonas Koch, Zdenek Stybar and Casper Pedersen lead the race for tenths of kilometres before they are brought back ahead of the first climb.

James Knox, Rémi Cavagna, Romain Seigle and Mark Pardun jump clear, while a group with KOM leader Ángel Madrazo, Imanol Erviti, Geoffrey Bouchard, Jakob Fuglsang, Luis León Sánchez, Maximiliano Richeze, Philippe Gilbert, Thomas de Gendt, Damien Howson, Amanuel Ghebreizhabier, Tao Geoghegan Hart, Nikias Arndt, Niklas Eg, Valerio Conti and Fernando Barceló bridge across on the Puerto de San Lorenzo.

Miguel Ángel López and Nairo Quintana make a move, but Primoz Roglic bridges the gap with the help of Sepp Kuss, Neilson Powless and Robert Gesink.

Bouchard bests Madrazo in the sprint for KOM points, which he repeats at the Alto de la Cobertoria. The Frenchman moves into the polka dot jersey.

De Gendt attacks ahead of the finishing climb, while Gilbert and Bouchard go with him. Most other attackers rejoin the leaders to tackle the Alto de la Cubilla more than 9 minutes ahead of the peloton.

With 7 kilometres to go Fuglsang and Brambilla are the remaining attackers. Astana sets the pace in the GC group, thus eliminating Quintana.

Meanwhile, Fuglsang heads out alone and he solos to victory in the last kilometres. Hart tries to bridge across, but to no avail. He finishes 22 seconds down on the stage winner.

López accelerates in the last kilometres to drop Valverde, while his rival in the young rider classification Pogacar stays glued to his wheel. Roglic closes the gap on his own pace and climbs to the finish with the two. They finish 23 seconds ahead of Valverde, who still sits in second.
