Race report
Blue skies and no wind at the start, while 26 degrees Celsius sais it’s going to be a hot day in the saddle.
Kenny Dehaes and Christoph Pfingsten jump off the front with 3 kms done. Peter Koning, Berden de Vries and Pieter Vanspeybrouck bridge the gap and the five riders race to a 6 minutes advantage.
Approaching the first climb the gap is down to 1’28”. Dehaes and Koning are the first to be reeled in, their companions a moment later.
In between the closing climbs Sébastien Turgot gives it a go, but as one group the pack tackles the last climb. Massacre is upon the riders in no time. Among the victims are Richie Porte and Alexander Kristoff. Only 18 riders left upfront.
Bob Jungels escapes in the descent and the 23-year old soloes to victory.
