Ruta del Sol 2017 Route stage 2: Torredonjimeno - Mancha Réal
Thursday, 16 February 2017 - As early as stage 2 the 2017 Ruta del Sol brings the Queen Stage. At 179.9 kilometres, the route travels from Torredonjimeno to Mancha Réal and takes in four ascents. The finish is at an elevation of 1,269 metres, which is the highest peak of this year's Ruta del Sol.
In the 2nd stage of the Ruta del Sol the riders are to crest the Alto Valle Puerto Viejo (1st category), Puerto de Siete Pilillas (2e categorie) and Puerto de Torres (3rd category). The first climb is crested after almost 30 kilometer and then the route continues on on hilly roads until the next two peaks appear after 135 and 166 kilometres.
A drop takes the riders to the foot of the Puerto Peña del Águila. At 5.3 kilometres, this 1st category ascent climbs from 779 metres to 1,269 metres, thus averaging 9.3%. The altitude accounts for the fact that this is the Queen Stage in the 2017 Ruta del Sol van 2017.
While last year’s Ruta del Sol opened with a number of flat stages, edition 2017 tells a completely different story. The 1st stage was all but flat, yet the race from Torredonjimeno to Mancha Réal is even tougher. In 2016 the Queen Stage was saved for last with Alejandro Valverde soloing to stage victory and the overall win.
