Race report
After 25 kilometres Daryl Impey, Simon Guglielmi, Bruno Armirail, Christopher Juul-Jensen, Jimmy Janssens, Morten Hulgaard, Valentin Ferron and Pierre Rolland initiate the breakaway before Luc Wirtgen and Jens Reynder track them down. The ten open up a gap of 3 minutes.
The lead group has been halved in the penultimate lap. Only Janssens, Armirail, Ferron, Impey and Guglielmi remaining.
Simon Carr attacks from the peloton on the Côte de Cherave and he joins the lead group just before the Côte d’Ereffe. The Briton accelerates on the climb with Ferron in his wheel.
The two are reeled in just before the Côte de Cherave, while Rochas attacks on the climb. He reaches the summit with Vansevenant and Kragh Andersen before he is dropped on descent.
The main group overhauls Vansevenant and Kragh Andersen on the first slopes of the Wall of Huy and then the thinning out begins. Pre-race favourite Pogacar can’t follow just after the steepest ramps, while Teuns and Valverde prove to be the strongest riders coming into the final turn. For a moment, the five time winner and record holder seemed to be on his way to a final win in his final Flèche Wallonne.
Teuns keeps a more consistent speed and drops the Spaniard on the home straight, winning his first-ever Classic with a 2 seconds lead over Valverde and Vlasov.
