The Giro’s 5th stage is predominantly flat and the finish is on the Tyrrhenian coast. A modest climb inside the last 50 kilometres is unlikely to put a spoke in the wheel of the sprinters, so a bunch sprint is next to inevitable in Terracina.
The finale is played out on a 9.2 kilometres circuit with wide roads. The home straight is 1,500 metres long and sits on 7.5 metres wide tarmac. A perfect sprint finish.
German champion Ackermann won this Giro’s first sprint ahead of Viviani and Ewan, while Gaviria won the 3rd stage after Viviani’s relegation.
